Let's say you are preparing to fight a two-front war, you might want two very different layouts of ships one each front to counter what the enemy brings.  Also, when you save your new design, you can check the box to &quot;auto upgrade&quot; it, so when you research the level 4 of some weapon that you have a level 3 on the ship, it will upgrade when you upgrade, you don't have to go back into ship designer to make a new ship.
